December just started, and the cold weather is already wreaking havoc on my hair (and my skin, but w/e, winter skincare can fix that). The most annoying, though, is always dandruff. Yep, I'm a beauty editor with dandruff. We exist! It's not all luscious, healthy locks around here, mmk? Dandruff (also known as seborrheic dermatitis by experts) affects nearly 50 percent of adults worldwide, and the itchy, flaky, and/or dry scalp that comes with it is most prevalent in the winter.

The key to treating your dandruff is knowing what it even is, though. Dandruff is an overgrowth of Malassezia, a fungus that’s naturally found on everyone’s skin, says dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, and it leads to plaques and flakes that can be dry or oily, depending on your scalp's ecosystem. This is why it's important to use an antifungal product to help kill some of the fungus and get your scalp back to its healthy state. And surprisingly, the easiest way to do this is with a dandruff shampoo that's packed with pyrithione zinc, ketoconazole, and selenium sulfide to stop that fungus from multiplying, hence reducing irritation, itch, and flakes. Better yet: There are so many available now that don't totally suck to use (I've tested dozens over the years). Here are a few top-rated dandruff shampoos, according to my own personal testing and Dr. Garshick's recs:

Pros

  • Cosmo Holy Grail Beauty Award winner
  • Fragrance free, making it great for sensitive scalps
  • Packed with some of our favorite scalp-loving ingredients (ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide)

Cons

  • Might not be strong enough for severe dandruff

I, somehow, didn’t get dandruff or dry scalp at all this winter, and I fully have this shampoo to thank. Winner of the Cosmo Holy Grail Award for best shampoo for sensitive scalps, this formula is fantastic at helping stave off and treat dandruff flakes without disrupting the skin barrier of my scalp. It’s got 1 percent pyrithione zinc to get rid of dandruff, but also moisturizes your scalp with ceramides.

One Cosmo editor says: "My NYC dermatologist recommends CeraVe’s under-$10 anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner to her clients, and now I understand why: Sure, it cleans my scalp without leaving behind a speck of dandruff, but it also hydrates my hair. The hyaluronic acid formula is both nourishing and effective, and while the scent is almost medicinal, the shampoo and conditioner are unfussy and do the job well. (Goodbye to both dandruff and oily roots!)”—ALEXANDRA WHITTAKER, EXECUTIVE SITE DIRECTOR

    Jupiter Balancing Shampoo

    Balancing Shampoo

    Pros

    • Gets rid of (and prevents) dandruff with pyrithione zinc
    • Moisturizes scalp and hair with squalane, while locking in hydration with coconut oil

    Cons

    • Essential oils in the formula can potentially irritate sensitive skin

Beauty editor Beth Gillette (hi, that's me) has been testing dandruff shampoos since she first discovered flakes on her shoulder in college after moving to Chicago. Of everything she's tested—expensive picks, dermatologist recs, drugstore cult-faves, and more—this Jupiter shampoo is easily her go-to every single winter when her dandruff flares. The formula is filled with antifungal pyrithione zinc, but it's also fairly gentle (no sulfates!) and moisturizing (@ squalane and coconut oil, ty) on hair and scalp. Most of all, though, it lathers well and smells great, making you think you're just using a hydrating shampoo rather than one specifically for dandruff.

One Cosmo editor says: "Out of all the dandruff shampoos I've tried, Jupiter's Balancing Shampoo reigns supreme. It's majorly helped rid my scalp of flakes and itch, all while offering up a lovely shower experience. It smells like an aromatherapy candle, thanks to orange peel oil, lavender oil, and vanilla oil to give my shower (and hair) a lil ~boost~."—BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR

      Best Dermatologist-Recommended Dandruff Shampoo

      Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Pros

      • Uses ketaconazole, a derm-loved antifungal for dandruff
      • Fantastic for persistent dandruff that isn't affected by lighter treatments

      Cons

      • Very strong, so start slow and only use as needed

Nizoral is a cult-favorite dandruff shampoo loved by derms, and it's actually pretty close to what you'd find prescribed from a doctor. It uses ketoconazole, an antifungal ingredient that helps kill dandruff-causing yeast, making it a master at getting rid of flaking, itchy, and scaling, says Dr. Garshick. She recommends lathering it through your roots twice a week, following up with a moisturizing conditioner and leave-in to keep your ends soft.

One Cosmo editor says: "When I lived in Chicago and went through the most brutal winters, my dandruff was at its worst. Itchy, flaky, oily scalp—I dealt with it all. This shampoo was the one saving grace to help break down the buildup and soothe the itch and irritation."—BG

Vichy Dercos Selenium Sulfide Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Dercos Selenium Sulfide Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Pros

      • Testers love how it reduces itch and irritation
      • Light, soft scent
      • Breaks down buildup

      Cons

      • Likely too drying for very-dry hair types

If the worst part of your dandruff is an itchy scalp that just won't quit, this selenium sulfide-based shampoo is fantastic. Selenium sulfide is an antifungal that helps inhibit the growth of malassezia (the dandruff-causing fungus on your scalp), and it's particularly good at helping with itchy, irritated skin. It's a bit stronger than pyrithione zinc, the antifungal in a lot of dandruff shampoos, making it ideal for those with persistent flakes.

One Cosmo editor says: "I get acne and dandruff (I'm the whole package!!), so I love a formula that incorporates both dandruff-killing andexfoliating ingredients. This one packs both selenium sulfide which seriously manages itchiness but also salicylic acid to reduce breakouts."—BG

Best Dandruff Shampoo For Oily Scalps

      OUAI Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Pros

      • Deeply cleans and breaks down buildup and dandruff with salicylic acid
      • Has a soft minty scent that slightly tingles

      Cons

      • Likely won't be hydrating enough for those with very dry hair or scalps

Dandruff and excess oil go hand in hand, which means scalp breakouts and bumps are also present in people who have dandruff. Fun! So whenever my scalp acne is the main character, I just suds up with this 2 percent salicylic acid shampoo that breaks down excess oil and dissolves any pore-clogging dead skin cells and flakes on my scalp. After a month of once-weekly use, I had fewer bumps on my scalp, and I felt like I didn’t need to wash my hair as frequently—a dream for anyone with greasy scalp IMO.

One Cosmo editor says: "Both my dad and brother begged me to bring home a really good dandruff shampoo when I came home for Thanksgiving. So, knowing I loved this for its gentle formula that's both effective and lovely to use, I stashed this in my bag. A month later, they're both obsessed with it and have requested a year's supply (as if I can supply them with that, lol). They both love the creamy texture that lathers up but doesn't leave their hair or scalp feeling too dry."—BG

      Best Dandruff Shampoo for Curls

Maria Nila Head & Hair Heal Shampoo

      Head & Hair Heal Shampoo
      $35AmazonAlso Consider

      Pros

      • The most moisturizing dandruff shampoo we've tested
      • Formulated for all hair types, but great for curls and coils
      • Gentle yet effective

      Cons

      • One of the most pricey dandruff formulas on this list

Huge dilemma: Flaky, dandruff-prone scalp with dry, curly ends. Fix: This moisturizing dandruff shampoo from Maria Nila. Instead of all the drying ingredients you're used to with dandruff shampoos, this one uses a gentler antifungal called piroctone olamine that helps control the Malassezia globosa (aka the fungus that causes dandruff flakes), but also helps calm inflammation. But this creamy shampoo also contains moisturizing aloe vera, sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, and peptides. It's much gentler than many other dandruff shampoos on this list, so you could use it every single wash, or switch off every other shampoo with a formula for volume, color care, smoothing—you name it.

One shopper says: "I should get a job with Maria Nila because I tell EVERYONE about these products. The Head and Hair Heal is my favorite, and it does such a good job keeping my scalp healthy and not itchy. It's made my life so much easier. If I go more than 72 hours without it, I can easily tell the difference!"

      • Available at practically every drugstore for under $10
      • Has a really rich lather, even though it doesn't contain sulfates (!)
      • Sustainable bottle contains 45 percent less plastic than standard shampoo bottles

      Cons

      • Might not be strong enough for those with very oily dandruff plaques

If your entire bathroom is filled with clean beauty products, you don't have to make sacrifices for an effective dandruff shampoo, thanks to Head & Shoulders Bare. This formula features only nine (!) ingredients, including gold-star antifungal pyrithione zinc to help reduce plaques and irritation. Best Smelling Dandruff Shampoo

      Biolage Scalp Sync Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Scalp Sync Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

      Pros

      • Reviewers loved the fresh, minty scent
      • Combines pyrithione zinc and salicylic acid to chemically buff away flakes
      • Has a v strong lather that's nice to use in the shower

      Cons

      • Doesn't contain a lot of moisturizers, so might not be suitable for very-dry hair types

Your dandruff shampoo doesn’t have to smell medicinal and boring to be effective. Proof? This formula from Biolage, which has a minty, floral aroma that I love. The scent is fairly light and breezy (meaning it won't completely overtake your shower), but it lingers on my hair to give me a little hint of freshness throughout the day.

But it's not just a pretty scent—this formula has all the same dandruff-fighting powers as the other shampoos on our list, thanks to a combo of antifungal pyrithione zinc and exfoliating salicylic acid. I lathered up with this shampoo once a week, and my irritation subsided in about a month (but, like, it smells so good that I continue using it every few weeks or so).

One shopper says: "I have tried numerous "dandruff" shampoos over the past few months. This one has worked since day one! It's been a week and it's simply perfect. And a bonus is that it smells just like any other Biolage shampoo, not like some chemical/medicine."

Best Dandruff Shampoo for Sensitive Scalps

        Vanicream Dandruff Shampoo

        Dandruff Shampoo

        Pros

        • Doesn't contain any sulfates or strong surfactants
        • Extremely gentle, but still helps fight dandruff with pyrithione zinc

        Cons

        • Can go out of stock often

Unfortunately, dandruff shampoos are usually filled with drying, irritating ingredients, which totally goes against exactly what most people with dandruff (read: sensitive scalps!) need. But Vanicream's shampoo is the opposite. It's the most simple formula I've ever seen. Of course, there's pyrithione zinc to help treat and prevent dandruff flares. But otherwise, the ingredients list is bare bones, including a lil panthenol to help moisturize, as well as a handful of coconut-based cleansers. In fact, it's free of sulfates and any strong surfactants that could irritate your skin. Just keep in mind this isn't the most cleansing formula, so you might want to throw in one of the gentle options below once or twice a week if you're prone to oiliness.

One shopper says: "This is one of my what-would-I-do-without-you products. I have stupidly sensitive skin with flares of seborrheic dermatitis, and this seems to minimize flares in terms of frequency, duration, and severity!"

What is the most effective shampoo for dandruff?

        line break

The most effective shampoo for dandruff is one that contains antifungal ingredients, like ketoconazole, pyrithione zinc, or selenium sulfide, says Dr. Garshick. (That's because dandruff is often attributed to an overgrowth of the yeast that naturally lives on the scalp—the more you know.)

But dandruff shampoos will also sometimes contain salicylic acid to break down dead skin and help reduce flakes, along with coal tar, which helps slow skin shed to eliminate some flaking, too.

        Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

How often should you wash your hair with dandruff?

        line break

How often you wash your hair with dandruff ultimately depends on your hair type, but “you can wash your hair with dandruff shampoos just two to three times per week to have positive effect,” says Dr. Garshick. “Some may prefer to use a dandruff shampoo every day or with every wash, which is fine as long as you don’t experience irritation, dryness, or sensitivity.”

How to choose the best dandruff shampoo:

        line break

        Look for specific actives.

Make sure your dandruff shampoo contains ingredients that will actually get rid of dandruff. Antifungals like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, and pyrithione zinc are proven to destroy the excess yeast on your scalp that’s causing dandruff. But if your scalp is covered with dry patches, or it gets hella greasy quickly (and maybe even has some acne too), def try salicylic acid too, which helps dissolve oil and chemically exfoliate dead skin cells before they flake off.

        Incorporate soothing ingredients.

No, ingredients like tea tree oil and aloe vera won’t get rid of dandruff on their own. But they will help minimize some of the inflammation on your scalp, which can in turn reduce some itching and irritation.

Also, if you’re dealing with a seriously itchy scalp, look for a formula spiked with coal tar. It’s not the best smelling, but it seriously helps reduce the shedding of your skin, leading to fewer flakes and irritation.

        Consider your hair type.

If you have super-dry hair, you’ll want a dandruff shampoo spiked with rich moisturizers, like shea butter and coconut oil, and also doesn’t contain harsh, drying sulfates. On the other hand, oily scalps need those sulfates to cut through oil and product buildup that can lead to greasy flaking. So regardless of which formula you choose, smooth on a moisturizing conditioner after shampooing to keep your hair feeling healthy, even when you’re lathering up with a medicated shampoo.
